The Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology, in partnership with University of Hawaii -Hilo (USA), Malaysia’s Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and Universiti Teknologi Mara, Cawangan Pulau Pinang, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in Indonesia, hosts the first online International Conference Workshop on Language and Literature (ICWOLL 2022) on November 15-17, 2022.
The theme, Convergences, Disruptions and Junctions: Exploring New Directions in Language and Literature, is an attempt to capture the dynamism and arbitrariness of the study of language and literature in this highly complex and fast-changing world. Transnationalism and human mobility across nation-states have propelled language and literature scholars to reexamine the processes of how language is being shaped and impacting the social, political, and cultural conditions of communities and societies. Moreover, the shift in pedagogical and communication modalities induced by the global health crisis has paved for language researchers and academics to re-think practices, be more creative in proposing solutions, discuss and collaborate emerging linguistic, literary, and communication challenges with peers in the field, which offer exciting opportunities in the teaching and research work. These result in conjunctions (blending of disciplines and approaches), disruptions (problematizing the relationships of language and other disciplines and frameworks), and junctions (the need for resolutions of the issues), making the fields of language and literature crucial in understanding the world amidst globalization and its consequences.
ICWoLL 2022 focuses on critical discourses and frameworks that develop and emerge from quantitative and qualitative research which interrogates language and literature issues through time and space. Multiculturalism, “New Englishes”, nativization, intelligibility, new genres, hybridity are just some of the concepts which necessitate the interdisciplinary approach to the study of language and literature bridging the gaps between disciplines and approaches. The conference, in particular, addresses new and developing methodologies and paradigms in the study of language and literature, focusing on power relations, transnational processes, and teaching pedagogies in all levels of education.
The conference features workshops that can provide participants a longer and more in-depth interaction with speakers on topics related to English Language Studies and its allied disciplines.
ICWoLL2022 also features a keynote speaker from the University of Hawaii and plenary speakers, as well as parallel sessions relevant to any of the following sub-themes:
*Paper presentations relevant to local languages and cultures are also accepted. However, abstracts and presentations should still be in English for a wider audience.
