Instituting a Specific Period for Admission of Students of All Graduate Programs and Submission of Concept Paper as Requirement for Admission

Subject: Instituting a Specific Period for Admission of Students of All Graduate Programs and Submission of Concept Paper as Requirement for Admission

October 27-31, 2014 Notification of results by the SGS Office

In order to achieve a more orderly and academic conduct of screening and admitting graduate students to their prospective courses, all Departments which are offering graduate programs are enjoined to schedule a specific period for admission of students. For the Second Semester AY 2014-2015, Admission Period shall start on October 1 and shall end one week before the Enrolment Period set by the Institute. Below is the schedule set by the SGS which the Departments shall follow:

Likewise, starting Second Semester, AY 2014-2015 all Departments concerned shall require all students who are seeking admission to their programs to submit a concept paper of their research topics/interests before they can be admitted to the program. The following guidelines shall be followed for the submission of the concept paper:

  1. Definition and Parts of a Concept Paper
    1. A concept paper can be defined as a short summary that tells the reader what the research is, why it is important, and how it will be carried out
    2. A concept paper may include the following parts:
      1. A clear description of the research topic, including a summary of what is already known about that topic;
      2. A one-sentence statement of the research question that the project will seek to answer;
      3. A rudimentary or initial theoretical framework;
      4. A description of how the researcher plans to answer the research question; This includes:
        1. a description of the data that the researcher plans to gather or use;
        2. a description of how the researcher will analyze these data.
    3. A statement of the benefits or anticipated outcomes or benefits along with a description of who will benefit and how.
    4. Concept papers typically range from 2 to 5 double-spaced pages (500 to 1250 words), not counting the list of references.
  2. Concept Paper and the Admission Process
    1. The concept paper should be the focal point of discussion during the admission interview conducted by the Department.
    2. Based on the research topic submitted by the students, a tentative research adviser can be assigned to the student within the semester. This will give sufficient time for both student and teacher to establish a good professional working relationship and develop research partnership. This collaboration between the adviser and the student can pave the way for publication of their research output.

All Departments may come up with their own implementing guidelines and may enforce additional provisions to the above guidelines provided that these are not contrary or do not contradict the policies set by the SGS.
