Abstract |
Recently, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has emerged as a non-invasive and potential tool for biomonitoring. This study assesses the effectiveness of the eDNA approach in conjunction with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) data infrastructure as a powerful synergy, significantly advancing our understanding of biodiversity and as a supplementary tool to standard fish visual census data in detecting and identifying crucial marine fish species within the marine protected area of Dalipuga, Iligan City and Bongo, Island, Maguindanao, Philippines. Results uncover the presence of significant fish species, including the newly discovered Indo-Pacific atherinomorine species, Doboatherina magnidentata. This species was also confirmed by fish visual census, providing validation of its existence in the marine sanctuary. Notably, this marks the inaugural documentation of D. magnidentata in Philippine marine waters. Also, the synergistic approach offer valuable insights into identifying significant fish species including the detection of Hippocampus comes (tiger-tail seahorse) in Bongo, Island, classified as threatened species by the IUCN. Traditional methods should complement synergistic approaches for enhanced taxonomic resolution and community analysis. |
