Abstract |
Siltation of aquatic bodies are few of the environmental impacts of silt spilling from siltation ponds of mining industries. Understanding the residency period of silt mitigates remediation of silted wastewater. This study presents the stability of silt particles in aqueous media. Silt was taken from siltation ponds of a nickel laterite mine in Southern Philippines. Solid loading of silt and amount of deflocculant were varied to compare the stability of particles in water for at least 29 days. Dry silt powders were added to water to make silt slips SS which were stored in sedimentation tubes of 18X1.5 cm (height X diameter).
Stratification were earliest in pure silt slips PSS than in treated silt slips TSS, and in low loaded LL than in high loaded HL SS. Settling column of PSS was clear before the fourth hour. Silt column of TSS remained dark and lasted for days. HL TSS had darker silt column than LL TSS which could be due to high particle collision that delay settling of silt at the bottom of the tubes. Height of sediments of SS were almost the same for the same solid loading even if silt colloid existed in the supernatant of TSS. It could mean that particle compression suppressed the card of house structuring of silt particles in PSS. Thus, deflocculants increase residency of colloidal laterite silt in water with negligible effect on the height of the compression zone of its flocculated silt. |
