Abstract |
One of the challenges in writing the history of Salay, a municipality in the Province of Misamis Oriental, is the inadequacy of written documents from both primary and secondary sources. The dearth of documents can be attributed to the idea that Salay, a place that is locally part of the periphery, is not worthy to be mentioned compared to those places that are considered with strategic importance to the colonial government. However, the oral narratives remain to be abundant and the need therefore to record such narratives is of great importance.
With this, the study at hand supposes that understanding place name is a way of disclosing, if not all, at least a glimpse of its history. In this study, the researchers find out that the place name Salay, carries the stories of the people that have something to do with their available natural environment they inhabited, and to their socio-cultural and occupational activities.
Therefore, the place name, Salay came about as influenced by their natural environment, material culture and economic activities. |
