by AEFC Team | Feb 20 2024

Dr. Juvanni A. Caballero, professor of History at the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), was invited as a visiting scholar from January 29 to February 3, 2024, by the Center for Philippine Studies (CPS) and the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures (IPLL) during the recently concluded University Lecture Series for the Philippine Studies Program of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.

As a visiting scholar, Dr. Caballero delivered three lectures to a group of undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty members handling courses about the Philippines. His lectures included the following:

  1. Nationalized Symbols of Injustices: Contemporary Sources of Bangsamoro Grievances;
  2. Diversity and Divergence: Internal Challenges in the Aspiration of Bangsamoro Right to Self-Determination; and
  3. When Maratabat Influences Business: A Glimpse into Price Discrimination in Lanao

Dr. Caballero was among the five Filipino experts who were invited to discuss topics that would help enrich the Philippine Studies Program of the University of Hawaii. Most of these experts were professors from Manila-based universities. Dr. Caballero was the only expert who spoke about Mindanao and the complex facets and issues that the said region is confronted with.

This makes his role in the lecture series crucial as “Philippine Studies can never be complete without including Mindanao and Bangsamoro studies.” This was articulated by Dr. Pia Arboleda, lead project investigator of the lecture series who concurrently heads the IPLL and the CPS of the University of Hawaii.

Apart from delivering lectures, Dr. Caballero was also given the privilege to observe classes, meet other scholars, and talk with officials of the University. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Philippine Consulate of Hawai’i where he was welcomed by Philippine Consul General Emil Fernandez and Vice Consul Leizel Caasi.

Previously, Dr. Caballero also served as the guest speaker during the 40th Anniversary of CPS in 2015.
