The Department of Physical Education (DPE) of the College of Education (CED) revisited the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Iligan on March 6, 2025 to officially commence Phase 2 of the Behind the Bars Program. The event marked a continued commitment to empowering persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) through sports, dance, and exercise.

The event started with an insightful rationale of the extension program by Asst. Prof. Vienna Lou Carbonell, the project proponent. She highlighted the importance of engaging in physical activities as a primary means of personal growth and rehabilitation. Also attending the program was Dr. Monera Salic Hairulla, the CED dean, who, in her message of support, emphasized the significant collaboration between the College and BJMP Iligan and the role of physical activity in empowering PDLs.

Dr. Junah Nagba, MSPE Coordinator, and Angel Michelle Tarranza, MSPE Organization President, led the ceremonial turnover of the sports equipment. The equipment will serve as resources that will be used by PDLs to participate actively in sports like volleyball and basketball.

JINSP Marivic D. Vergara and JCINSP Carmelo Corsame, BJMP officials, expressed their appreciation for the initiative and recognized the importance of collaborative efforts to support the reintegration of PDLs into society.

The highlight of the event was the symbolic chain cutting, which officially marked the launch of Phase 2 of the Behind the Bars Program. This symbolic gesture symbolizes a fresh start for both program and PDLs, as they continue to improve toward personal transformation.

Dr. Chiedel Joan G. San Diego, Chairperson of the DPE, expressed her excitement about the extension program. She said, “We strive to empower PDLs, fostering positive change and enhancing their lives... With that, we are very excited to come back for more conduct of physical activities.”

Phase 2 of Behind the Bars Program is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to engage with local communities and provide meaningful programs that support the rehabilitation and well-being of PDLs.
