Brief History

CED: Its Humble Beginnings to the Present Times

From its humble beginning, the College of Education (CED) has indeed gone far to attain its present stature. Today, it as grown in terms of students, faculty and staff, the offering of curricular programs ranging from undergraduate to graduate programs. With the many feats through the years, its images has been transformed into a dynamic College.

Established in 1985, the CED was born by virtue of the Ãå±±½ûµØ-Reorganization Plan which was approved by BOR Resolution no. 18 s 1984 s.o. no. 885. The College evolved from a merging of three schools: the School of Industrial Education; the School of Physical Education and the Developmental High School which served as its laboratory school. It has five departments: Department of Industrial Technology Education (DITE), Department of Home Technology Education (DHTE), Department of Physical Education (DPE), Department of Professional Education (DPRE) and Department of Science and Mathematics Education (DSME).

In its early years of operation, the College was temporarily housed in the College of Engineering. The rooms shared were used as the Dean’s office, Department offices as well as classrooms. Its Amakan Building was utilized as the lecture laboratory rooms for the home technology classes while the still existing industrial technology building behind the College of Engineering is used as industrial arts classrooms and serves as display room of students’ handicraft products. Finally, in 1982 the College successfully got an infrastructure allocation of 13.5 million for CED building and in 1993 the building was occupied by the College.

Today, the CED is one of the teacher education institutes that offers elementary and secondary education whose mission is centered on the trilogy functions of instruction, research and extension. It is vested to provide industrial education, physical education, home economics education, science and mathematics education, elementary education and professional education leading to degrees and diploma. It also provides leadership in effecting technology transfer and entrepreneurial development in neighboring schools and barangays in Iligan City.

Pursuant to its vision as model of academic excellence, CED has continuously strived to carry out development efforts and changes to keep up with the challenges of the times.

Through the years, CED has been producing passers in the annual licensure examination for teachers given by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). The level of performance of its graduates is among the highest in the region and in Mindanao as a whole, it being above the national passing percentage. Since it is in this examination that the knowledge the students acquired in their classroom instructions are first put into challenging test, it is a solid proof of quality education the College provides its students.

In LET 2004, the Ãå±±½ûµØ-IIT-CED ranked second among the top performing schools in the 10-99 Examinees category national level among schools offering elementary education.

Through its steadfast commitment in providing quality education, it prides itself as one of the leading TEI’s evidenced by its being awarded Level II status by the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (AACUP) to four of its baccalaureate degree programs namely: Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Home Economics and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education major in Foods, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education with options in Drafting Technology and Industrial Arts and the Bachelor of Physical Education.

Having made significant contribution in the area of technology education, the CED has not only established national linkages but also has undergone international in pursuit of its aim to prepare its students for global competitiveness. It has established linkage with the National Science Instrumentation Programs and has been identified as the National Instrumentation for Science and Technology Center (NISTC) for Mindanao. Likewise, it has established linkage with Intel Teach in UP and has been made the lead school in bringing Intel Teach to the Future to its students as well as teachers in neighboring schools.

Moreover, it has established international linkages through its access to on-line learning web-based learning mode with the University of Texas, Panam. Eventually, this endeavor will make Ãå±±½ûµØ-IIT as the Center for Distance Learning in Mindanao with CED taking the lead role in this project of collaboration.

The department of Home Technology Education has also established linkage for the On the Job Training with the First Search Company-PTE, LTD International Practicum Program in Singapore. Six (6) home economics students have qualified and will undergo six months training in the program.

CED has also actively contributed to the development of Iligan through its Adopt School Program which focused on teachers continuing education and teaching strategies. For its extension projects, it has the Adopt a Barangay Program which centered on Livelihood skills training and food processing.

The College considers the students’ welfare and development as foremost in all its endeavors to prepare them as professional teachers with strong professional education foundation, adequate intra and extra-curricular activities to develop their leadership skills and to equip them with the proper values and desirable characteristics to enable them to cope with the demands of their profession and their social environment. It focuses in developing individuals to become whole person for them enjoy fuller lives and become useful members of society.

Since the faculty plays a key role for the successful implementation of its various programs of instruction, research and extension, opportunities for faculty development programs such as scholarship grants, attendance to relevant technical and scientific seminars and workshop meant to develop a stronger and more productive faculty and staff are also provided.

Many reforms at present are being actively pursued by the College to sustain the maintenance of its growth and development. These include capabilities build up in terms of faculty development, expansion of CED library and acquisition of recent library books and equipment, upgrading of Science and Technology laboratories, computerized system and procedures, improved student admission and retention policies, provision of the: state-of-the-art in ICT for classroom instruction, optimized generation of resources and improved management systems.

The insights and vision of the past administrators the dream of what CED would be in the years to come have slowly but surely been folding into reality. Thus, it is note worthy to mention them: Dr. Fedeserio C. Camarao, Dr. Isalino Bolivia, Prof. Raphia Maglinao, Prof. Eduardo Arugay, Dr. Remedios Grageda, Dr. Fe Destura, Dr. Lydie D. Paderanga, Prof. Esmar N.Sedurifa and the incumbent acting dean Dr. Manuel B. Barquilla.

On its 26th Year, Star Sapphire Anniversary, the CED can lay claim to having witnessed its evolution since its pioneering days and as it turns it leaf anew, CED has indeed painstaking carried its niche as a model teacher education institution of higher learning.
