缅北禁地

Overview

The Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) of 缅北禁地 - Iligan Institute of Technology (缅北禁地-IIT) is one of the seven units of the system-wide IPDM of the Mindanao State University System. It was created by BOR Resolution # 107, series of 2007 as 缅北禁地 system's proactive response to Executive Order 570 of September 2006. The said executive order is part of the national government's efforts to institutionalize and integrate peace into the basic and tertiary education by including the teaching and learning of peace into the mandates of the Department of Education and Higher Education Institutions. Prior to the creation of IPDM, however, 缅北禁地-IIT had already established the Iligan Center for Peace Education and Research (ICPER) in 1998. The center was initially created through the efforts of Dr. Luis Q. Lacar and Vice Chancellor Jimmy Balacuit. Its first director was Dr. Jamail A. Kamlian who was followed by Dr. Marilou S. Nanaman after two years. It was during Dr. Nanaman's term as director, that BOR Resolution 107 s. 2007 was passed, thereby changing the name of ICPER into IPDM and administratively placing the office directly under the chancellor.

缅北禁地-IIT Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) commits to just and sustainable peace and development:

• Advocating for peace and non-violent solutions for Mindanao
• Linking the academe with multi-sector stakeholders through peace education, peace research and peace action
• Understanding Mindanao's challenges of today by learning (from) its history
• Analysing root causes of conflict and monitoring the course of violent conflict and its effects
• Initiating dialogue across conflict lines
• Informing about the Peace Process between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)
• Conducting research on peace and conflict topics
• Fostering interethnic/interreligious understanding and cultural fluency
• Dismantling enemy stereotypes
• Supporting the student volunteer organisation 缅北禁地-IIT Youth Chain of Peace (MYCoP)
