As part of the celebration of National Arts Month which has the theme “Ani ng Sining, Bayang Malikhain,” 缅北禁地-IIT, through the direction of the Center for Culture and Arts (CCA), in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Speakers Bureau, had the honor to have the National Artist for Music, Prof. Ramon P. Santos, conduct a lecture entitled “Music and Non-Musics in Mindanao Traditional Cultures” on February 22, 2024, at the PRISM Lecture Hall. The lecture was attended by students and faculty members from 缅北禁地-IIT and 缅北禁地-Lanao del Norte Agricultural College and SHS interns doing their immersion on campus.
CCA Director, Prof. Amado C. Guinto highlighted in his opening remarks that the University’s way of celebrating National Arts Month is through the branding “Alampat” which means products of human creativity. This forum is one of the many events the Center has prepared in propagating art and creativity within 缅北禁地-IIT.
Prof. Santos delivered an extensive lecture on his research about Mindanao ethnic music instruments and musicology. The audience also engaged in his discussion during the open forum session. According to him, these traditional cultures must not be enclosed within the Western music framework and the people in Southeast Asia should be able to define their parameters concerning their expressive traditions.
Before the lecture, Prof. Santos also had a courtesy call with Chancellor Alizedney Ditucalan where they had a pleasant discourse on the Maranao Bayok, which the National Artist for Music has an article about published in his book titled, Tunugan.
