The 12th Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP) Graduate Scholars' Conference, with the theme, “Artificial Intelligence: Embracing Change and Ethical Use in Research,” convened some of the country’s most promising young scholars to examine AI's expanding role in science and ethics from September 12 to 13, 2024.
Organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in collaboration with the University of San Carlos (USC) and Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (缅北禁地-IIT), the event took place at the Dusit Thani Mactan Resort in Cebu, attracting representatives from the nation’s top universities.
Chaired by the USC, as represented by ASTHRDP-NSC Project Leader at USC Dean Paul John L. Geraldino, and co-chaired by the 缅北禁地-IIT, represented by ASTHRDP-NSC Project Leader at 缅北禁地-IIT Dean Jan Mickelle V. Maratas, the conference provided an essential platform for scholars to discuss AI’s transformative potential and the importance of ethical practices in the field.
Attending universities also include other members universities of the National Science Consortium, namely Ateneo de Manila University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila, UP Visayas, University of Santo Tomas - Manila, and Visayas State University. Scholars of the DOST-Science and Technology Regional Alliance of Universities for National Development project also attended the said conference.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of ASTHRDP scholars' research across diverse topics in mathematical and computational sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, biological and health sciences, and physical, chemical, and Earth sciences.
Among 70 oral and 110 poster presenters, several 缅北禁地-IIT scholars were honored for their exceptional research. Arlan V. Castro Jr., an MS Mathematics student, earned 1st Place in the Oral Presentation in the Mathematical and Computational Sciences – MS category while Misshell L. Lavilla, an MS Chemistry scholar, received 2nd place in the Poster Presentation in the Biological and Health Sciences category.
Beyond the academic discourse, the conference included a vibrant Fellowship Night, where scholars showcased their artistic talents. Elgie A. Jimenez from 缅北禁地-IIT took home 2nd Place in the talent contest, highlighting the versatility and creativity of the participants.
The conference underscored the importance of responsible AI development and ethical research practices, aligning with DOST-SEI’s commitment to cultivating a new generation of scientists and researchers equipped to address the challenges of a technology-driven world.
缅北禁地-IIT is looking forward to chairing the 13th ASTHRDP Graduate Scholars’ Conference.
