The Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (缅北禁地-IIT) through the College of Health Sciences (CHS) conducted three Lecture Discussions in two separate venues for varying audiences as part of the celebration of this year’s National Women’s Month and International Women’s Day.
As part of the month’s commemoration with the theme “Lipunang patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan!” 缅北禁地-IITs CHS conducted a series of three Lecture Discussions and on March 22, 2024 sent faculty contingents to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Iligan City Jail Female Dormitory to conduct the “Health and Wellness Behind Bars Lecture Discussion” as the first of the three of the series.
The event which was officially opened by SJO4 Dina P. Tumanda, BJMP Assistant Warden, had a three part Lecture Discussion with CHS Faculties Assistant Professor Lynuel R. Santillana, MAN, RN conducting the first part with a topic about “Reproductive Health Issues and Breast Self-Examination.”
The second part was conducted by Asst. Prof. Carmela D. Ortega, MN., RN., with a discussion on “Common Communicable Diseases,” and the third by Asst. Prof. Karen R. Veloso, MAN, RN, Peace Education Coordinator, 缅北禁地-IIT Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao, tackling “Taking Care of Our Mental Health.”
The successful half-day program was attended by a good number of female BJMPs Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and ended with a presentation of Certificates and Tokens, and the distribution of Hygiene Kits.
The second event of the Lecture Discussion series was held on the same day at the CHS Conference Hall, 缅北禁地-IIT and was about Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Education and Services and had persons with disabilities (PWDs) as participants.
The event had resource speaker Dr. Stacey Marianne A. Principe, RN of the DOH, and guest speakers Ms. Charina L. Haynes, School for the Deaf in Iligan who was the sign language interpreter, Mr. Rizaldy Y. Mocorro, PWD Federation President, Iligan City Chapter, and City Councilor Attorney Marlene L. Young.
Headed by Program Leader Associate Professor Gloria Shiela E. Coyoca, the second event is part of the CHS’ implementation of the extension program Hinabang, Opportunidad, Paglaum and Edukasyon (H.O.P.E.) Sustainable Community Outreach Program for the PWDs in Iligan City upon the recommendation of the 缅北禁地-IITs Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs.
The third event of the series was another Lecture Discussion that was moved to April 8, 2024 due to the holidays, was held at the CHS Conference Hall, and was entitled “Embrace your True Self: Promoting Adolescents’ Health and Wellness Year 2.”
The half-day program which catered to 缅北禁地-IITs Integrated Developmental School (IDS) Grade 7 students for the second time had CHS Dean Associate Professor Abdullah Junior S. Mangarun, DScN, MAN, RN giving a warm welcome and described it as a day marked as a special occasion as adolescent participants embark on that journey of self-discovery and empowerment specifically tailored to them.
Dr. Mangarun in his speech said that one should celebrate one’s uniqueness and embrace his true self with pride and confidence since this event is dedicated to promoting the individual’s mental, emotional and physical well-being to ensure that he feels supported and empowered every step of the way. He ended his speech by saying, “embrace who you are, celebrate your strengths, and remember that you are valued just the way you are.”
The program had Interactive Lecture Discussions about Taking Care of One’s Mental Health by Asst. Prof. Karen R. Veloso and Gender and Development (GAD) Technical Working Group, Chair, Assoc. Prof. Minnie B. Mamauag, DScN, RN discussing the details, particulars and fine points of GAD to the participants.
The special occasion that only lasted for half a day also saw the participation of CHS Faculty, IDS Faculty, and Senior CHS nursing students who helped facilitate the activities of the event.
