FABLAB Mindanao hosts three-day workshop on Introduction to Embedded Systems in collaboration with My.Comapps

by Kyle Christian Belono, Training Assistant, CCS | Sep 25 2024

The 缅北禁地-IIT FABLAB Mindanao recently held a three-day hands-on workshop on introduction to embedded systems in collaboration with My.Comapps titled, “Create.code.” The collaboration was spearheaded by Asst. Prof. Maria Fe P. Bahinting, special assistant at 缅北禁地-IIT FABLAB Mindanao, along with Ms. Apple Rose B. Alce, project leader, her training assistant, Mr. Kyle Christian Belono, and trainers Mr. Jofel A. Batutay and Mr. Samfford Cabaluna.

The workshop aimed to equip participants with essential skills in embedded systems, microcontroller programming, and project development.

The first day of the workshop kicked off with a series of lectures, introducing participants to the core concepts of embedded systems and their practical applications. Ms. Alce, Mr. Batutay, and Mr. Cabaluna and the assistance of Asst. Prof. Bahinting and 缅北禁地-IIT Fablab Mindanao, provided a comprehensive overview of various microcontroller boards with a specific focus on the widely-used Arduino Uno (ATmega328P).

The lectures covered the fundamentals of how embedded systems function, their importance in modern technology, and the diverse range of projects that can be built using microcontrollers. Participants ranging from beginners to those with intermediate knowledge were able to grasp the importance of embedded systems in everyday devices.

In the afternoon, Mr. Batutay shifted to a live coding session. During the hands-on activity, the participants were guided step-by-step to create their own mini-project using Arduino boards. This session emphasized practical learning, encouraging participants to engage directly with the software and hardware components of their project.

The second day of the workshop allowed participants to delve deeper into their projects, building on the concepts learned the previous day. With the guidance of Mr. Batutay, Mr. Belono, and Mr. Cabaluna, participants worked independently and in groups to develop their own mini-projects. The facilitators provided mentorship throughout the day, offering advice and troubleshooting support to ensure participants could successfully complete their projects. This segment of the workshop highlighted creativity and innovation as participants applied their newly acquired skills to design functional and practical devices. Many attendees expressed excitement about the hands-on experience finding it rewarding to see their ideas come to life.

On the final day of the event, participants presented their completed projects through group pitches. Each participant explained the functionality of their device as well as the challenges and solutions encountered during the development process. The presentations allowed participants to showcase their technical knowledge and communication skills.

Following each pitch, Ms. Alce along with Dr. Arnel Zamayla provided constructive feedback focusing on both the presentation techniques and the practical functionality of the devices. The feedback session was an opportunity for participants to refine their technical skills and enhance their ability to communicate their ideas effectively.

The three-day workshop concluded with a closing ceremony where participants were awarded certificates of completion. Dr. Zamayla commended the participants for their dedication, creativity, and problem-solving abilities throughout the event.

The success of the workshop highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between FABLAB Mindanao and my.ComApps in fostering technological innovation and hands-on learning. This workshop serves as a testament to the power of practical learning environments where participants can develop real-world skills in emerging technologies. This became the beacon to the future that aims to continue organizing similar events to inspire the next generation of innovators and technologists.
