In a powerful affirmation of community spirit and compassion, the "Gender and Development (GAD) Initiative for Older Adults' Optometric Medical Mission" was held at the CED Amphitheater on October 14, 2024, coinciding with the celebration of Elderly Month.

Led by the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and the Research Center for Healthy Aging, this activity was implemented to uplift and serve seniors who need vital eye health assessment and management in Iligan City.

This GAD-approved extension activity welcomed a total of 100 senior participants who underwent comprehensive eye care services provided throughout the day. Screenings, consultations, and educational sessions focused on maintaining eye health, and addressing issues particularly relevant to older adults were done.

Organizers expressed their sincere gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this mission. Special thanks were given to the Federation of Senior Citizen Association in the Philippines, Iligan Chapter, for their active participation with the CHS’ GERIA team, including the dedicated junior nursing students who assisted and served.

A significant acknowledgment was made to the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists-Iligan Chapter, particularly to Dr. Lilibeth OD Imperial, Dr. Mary Ann Superable Nacion, and Dr. Rose May Maramot, for their invaluable service in facilitating health teaching on eye health management and conducting on-the-day eye screening for all participants. Their expertise ensured that participants received high-quality eye care tailored to their needs.

Furthermore, the support of the 缅北禁地-IIT Gender and Development Center (GADC) was highlighted, with particular gratitude directed to Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs Prof. Nancy Q. Echavez and GADC Focal Person Asst. Prof. Yasmira Moner.

"The encouragement and care demonstrated today reflect our shared responsibility towards our elderly population, and together, we are making a real difference,” said Assoc. Prof. Minnie Mamauag, head of the Research Center for Healthy Aging.

The medical mission not only provided essential health services but also fostered a sense of community among participants, reminding everyone present of the importance of nurturing and caring for the elderly. As the day concluded, there was a strong sentiment of hope and collaboration for future initiatives aimed at promoting the well-being of senior citizens.
